How did Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva come to be addressed by that name?

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has also been commonly addressed in

the Chinese language as Guanshiyin Pusa, with the character guan

denoting regarder, shi denoting world, and yin denoting sounds. As it

happened, the character shi coincided with the middle character of

Tang emperor Taizong' s name, Li Shimin. The great master Xuanzang

avoided disrespect to the emperor and expressly appealed for permission

to remove the character shi from the Chinese version of

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva' s name. Guanyin Pusa was the

revised rendition.
